Summary of the Trail

2009 - Pacific Northwest NST

The Pacific Northwest NST is a rugged backcountry hiking trail that connects three national parks, six national forests, and many wilderness areas near the U.S. northwest border. It was first scouted out by Ron Strickland in the early 1980s.  The trail's feasibility study stated that the route was possible but that it met no recreational need. Even so, the Pacific Northwest Trail Asssociation persisted, and the trail is now part of the Nation Trail System and is largely built out.  Meanwhile the PNTA has become a leader in innovative youth programs.
The PNT is unique in that it follows an east/west trajectory from Glacier National Park through the North Cascades National Park to Olympic National Park on the Pacific coast - showcasing some of the world renown landscapes of the Pacific Northwest.  The trail is administered by the Forest Service.
